Guwahati, Apr 19: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has initiated an internal inquiry to investigate allegations of corruption, sabotage, and misconduct by party members in connection with the upcoming Panchayat elections.
APCC President Bhupen Kumar Borah has constituted a three-member investigation committee headed by former Union Minister Paban Singh Ghatowar. The other members include former legislator RP Sarmahm and APCC Vice-President Bobbeeta Sharma.
The committee will look into complaints related to irregularities in ticket distribution, cash-for-ticket allegations, intentional walkovers to opposition candidates, unexplained nomination withdrawals, and other forms of anti-party activities.
According to Borah, the party is committed to transparency and internal discipline. He stated that action would be taken against those found guilty based on the committee’s findings.
The panel has been directed to submit its report by May 7.
The Panchayat elections in Assam will be held in two phases — May 2 in 14 districts and May 7 in the remaining 13 districts. The last date for nomination filing was April 11, and counting of votes is scheduled for May 11.
