Agartala, April 21, 2025: Heavy rains on Sunday night till Monday morning has triggered widespread waterlogging and disruption across several districts in Tripura, exposing the vulnerability of civic infrastructure and hospital preparedness.
In Agartala, a massive tree was uprooted due to continuous rainfall around 6:30 am on Monday in the Office Line area, crashing into a fifty-foot boundary wall of the boys’ hostel adjacent to Umakanta Academy. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. Quick intervention from the Agartala Municipal Corporation and the Forest Department led to the removal of the tree and restoration of road access.
“Immediate action was taken to clear the debris and ensure public safety,” said a municipal official.
However, the situation was dire at GB Hospital, where incessant rainfall led to water entering the emergency department, hampering both treatment and movement. “Patients and staff struggled throughout the night due to water stagnation. It’s an extremely concerning situation,” a hospital staff member stated.
The impact of the rain wasn’t limited to the state capital. In Udaipur, Gomati district, the surgical ward of the district hospital was flooded with mud and water. Patients reported severe difficulties, while allegations surfaced that the hospital administration failed to respond.
“No one from the hospital management came forward. We were left to suffer,” complained a patient’s relative.
In the southern district, especially in Sabroom subdivision, power supply was disrupted since Sunday night, leaving residents without electricity. “We’ve been in darkness for more than 12 hours. This is unacceptable,” said a resident.
Belonia Sub-Divisional Hospital’s medicine department also suffered waterlogging, further adding to public hardship.
In Hrishyamukh’s Govinda Tripura Para Anganwadi Center under Ratanpur ADC Village under South district, locals blamed the unscientific elevation of the newly constructed national highway for flooding. “Earlier, water used to flow naturally. Now it collects around the center after every rain,” said a local resident.
“This has hampered our children’s education for two years. We want to know what permanent steps the administration will take before another monsoon begins,” questioned another local.
