Manipur today observed Khongjom Day 2025 with solemnity and pride at the Khongjom War Memorial Complex in Thoubal District. The event was graced by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, who led the state in paying rich tributes to the brave warriors of the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.

Atop Kheba Hill, the Governor laid a wreath at the war memorial in remembrance of the heroes who valiantly defended Manipur’s sovereignty. The tribute ceremony included Guard of Honour, General Salute, Reverse Arms, Sounding of Last Post, a two-minute silence, Slope Arms, and Order Arms as a mark of deep respect.

The Governor also offered homage to the legendary warrior Paona Brajabashi by laying a wreath at his statue at the foothills, followed by a ceremonial Gun Salute. Rituals included offering Tarpon at the Khongjom River and a tribute to the Sankirtan tradition.

Addressing the gathering, Governor Bhalla condemned yesterday’s terror attack at Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, extending heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.

Speaking on the significance of the day, the Governor described Khongjom Day as a tribute to Manipur’s courageous sons who fought with unmatched valour during the 1891 Anglo-Manipur War. “It was more than a battle—it was a testament to honour, patriotism, and self-determination. The indomitable spirit of Manipur remains etched in world history,” he said.

Reflecting on Manipur’s current trajectory, the Governor highlighted efforts toward restoring peace and stability. He pointed to ongoing initiatives for the rehabilitation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and employment generation under the Ministry of Tourism’s Hunar Se Rojgar programme, particularly aimed at displaced youth.

The Governor stressed the need to strengthen education, noting the recent inauguration of Information Technology Centres in Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, and Senapati—projects funded by the Ministry of Home Affairs to equip students for the digital era.

As part of a broader push for social reform, he highlighted the state’s launch of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, a campaign against substance abuse. He also announced that Manipur has received its highest-ever allocation under MGNREGA for the 2025-26 fiscal year, marking a major step in rural development.

Governor Bhalla urged the youth to honour the sacrifices of Khongjom’s heroes by embodying the values of justice, equality, and unity. “Let us work together to build a brighter, stronger, and united Manipur,” he said.

The ceremony was attended by prominent dignitaries, including former Chief Minister O. Ibobi Singh, Lok Sabha MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, MLAs, Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh, DGP Rajiv Singh, and senior civil and police officials.
