Agartala, April 24, 2025: In an extraordinary turn of events, a 33-year-old driver from South Tripura facilitated and formalised the marriage of his own wife to her longtime lover in a public ceremony that has captured the attention of the region.

Police confirmed on Thursday that Nayan Saha, a resident of Birchandra Manu village organized the wedding of his 27-year-old wife Jhuma to Dipankar Banik, a local vegetable vendor after finding the two in an intimate situation. The incident reportedly ended an eight-year marriage marked by emotional strain, culminated in a temple wedding attended by hundreds of villagers.

“This decision came after a confrontation. Despite reports that Nayan had subjected Jhuma to emotional distress due to her extramarital affair, no official complaint was ever lodged,” stated Jayanta Das, Officer-in-Charge of the Monpathar police outpost.

The unconventional wedding took place on April 23 at a nearby temple, with community members acting as witnesses and offering their approval. “The ceremony was consensual and conducted in the presence of villagers, reflecting an unusual but peaceful resolution,” Das confirmed.

Jhuma, along with her two sons from her marriage to Nayan, has since moved in with her new husband. Both parties have initiated divorce proceedings, and officials said the couple intends to formally register the new marriage once the divorce is final.

No legal action has been taken by the authorities, who cite the mutual agreement and community backing as key reasons for their decision not to intervene.
