Guwahati, Apr 25: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) president Badruddin Ajmal on Thursday condemned the statement made by party MLA Aminul Islam regarding the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Ajmal clarified that the remarks were made in a personal capacity and do not reflect the party’s position.
In a video statement released by the AIUDF office, Ajmal said, “What Haji Aminul said is very unfortunate. At this time, we must stand with the Indian government. A terrorist has no caste or religion. The statement is Aminul’s own and not the party’s comment.”
Islam, who represents the Dhing constituency in Assam, was arrested by Assam Police for making remarks deemed derogatory and provocative. According to police, his comments—made during a public event—were widely circulated on social media and had the potential to incite tension.
The Assam Police, in a post on platform X, stated: “On the basis of a misleading and instigating statement by Dhing MLA Sh. Aminul Islam in public, which went viral and had potential to create an adverse situation, Nagaon PS Case 347/25 was registered under sections 152, 196, 197(1), 113(3), 352, and 353 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). He has been arrested accordingly.”
Assam DGP Harmeet Singh confirmed that Islam was taken into custody and brought to the Nagaon police station.
Commenting on the matter, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state would take strict action against any attempt to justify or defend the Pahalgam attack. “Assam will take the strongest possible action against anyone who dares to defend—directly or indirectly—the horrific, Pakistan-sponsored terror attack in Pahalgam,” the Chief Minister stated in a post on X.
