Shillong, Apr 26: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has revealed that illegal rat-hole mining is widespread in Meghalaya, with approximately 1,200 tonnes of coal being extracted daily under inhumane conditions, despite a ban on mining in the state. The ED’s investigation, which is connected to money laundering linked to illegal coal mining and the operation of coke plants, led to searches at 15 locations across Meghalaya and Assam.
The raids focused on premises in Jadigittim and Nongalbibra in Meghalaya, as well as in Jogighopa (Bongaigaon), Margherita (Tinsukia), and Guwahati in Assam. The investigation is based on a complaint filed by Meghalaya Police. According to the ED, illegal mining is carried out by managers, “sardars,” and laborers using primitive tools in the South Garo Hills area.
