Manipur: Five Militants Involved In Extortion Activities Arrested

In a major crackdown on extortion activities, security forces in Manipur have arrested five militants belonging to different proscribed outfits during extensive intelligence-based combing and cordon and search operations carried out across the state in the past 24 hours.

Two cadres of the banned PLA/RPF outfit were apprehended from Langthabal Mantrikhong Mayai Leikai under Singjamei Police Station in Imphal West district. The arrested individuals have been identified as Sorokhaibam Joysankar alias Haoba (33) and Moirangthem Nelson alias Mani (30). Both were allegedly involved in extorting money from the public. Security personnel recovered two mobile phones with SIM cards and a two-wheeler vehicle from their possession.

In separate operations, two active members of the proscribed PREPAK(Pro) group were arrested in Imphal East district. Elangbam Langamba Meitei alias Ibungo (25) was picked up from Tellou Mamang Leikai under Lamlai Police Station, while Khongbantabam Samarjit Meitei alias Langamba (26) was arrested from Seijang Mayai Leikai under Yaingangpokpi Police Station. Both were reportedly engaged in extortion activities. A mobile phone was seized from Khongbantabam Samarjit’s possession.

Additionally, a sympathizer of the banned UNLF group was arrested by Manipur Police from Heigrujam Mamang Leikai under Nambol Police Station in Imphal West district. The individual, identified as Wayenbam Bijoy Meitei (53), led the police to a cache of arms, including one AK-56 rifle with a magazine, one .303 rifle with a telescopic scope and magazine, one 7.62 mm empty magazine, and 15 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition.

All arrested persons and seized items have been handed over to the respective police stations for further investigation and legal action.
