Guwahati, Apr 26: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday warned that the National Security Act (NSA) would be invoked against individuals posting content in support of Pakistan, either directly or indirectly, on social media.
The statement came amid growing national outrage over the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives. Addressing the media in Guwahati, Sarma said the government was closely monitoring social media platforms and had arrested a youth from Hajo in Kamrup district earlier in the day for allegedly sharing anti-national content.
“We are investigating the posts. Anyone supporting Pakistan directly or indirectly will be booked under NSA. We will take strict action,” Sarma said.
His remarks were made after releasing the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) manifesto for the upcoming Panchayat elections in the state, to be held in two phases on May 2 and May 7. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 11. Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia was also present during the event.
Following the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, the Government of India has taken stern measures against Pakistan, including the temporary suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. The decision was taken during a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and attended by Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
