As part of a nation-wide initiative, the “Fit India Sundays on Cycle” campaign was successfully conducted today at the Sports Authority of India (SAI), North East Regional Centre (NERC), Imphal, Takyel Complex.
The cycle rally, featuring around 150 participants, commenced from SAI NERC Complex to Malom Oil Depot and returned to the starting point. The event was flagged off by Chief Guest L. Ashok Kumar, Joint Director (IPR), Manipur, in the presence of Laijing L. Maring, Assistant Director (Personnel and Administration) SAI NERC Imphal; Laishram Samritya Singh, Assistant Director (Khelo India) SAI NERC Imphal; Ms. Pushpa Maibam, Media and Communication Officer, PIB Imphal; and N. Nando, Assistant Director (News), DDK Imphal, alongside media personnel and other officials.
Addressing the gathering, L. Ashok Kumar emphasized the importance of cycling in daily life, recalling the earlier times when cycles were the primary mode of transportation. He encouraged citizens to dedicate at least 30 minutes each day to cycling for a healthier lifestyle.
Organized under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the event builds upon the success of earlier campaigns like the Fit India Cycling Drive, which saw participation from over 1.5 crore citizens. Taking this vision forward, the Ministry launched the Fit India Cycling Drive—Making Cycling Sundays a Janbhagidari Movement—with the goal of making cycling a regular part of Indian life.
The “Fit India Sundays on Cycle” campaign has quickly evolved into a nationwide movement, encouraging people to dedicate their Sundays to fitness and environmental awareness, aligning with the Honourable Prime Minister’s mantra, “Fitness Ka Dose, Aadha Ghanta Roz.” The initiative promotes cycling not only as a health-enhancing activity but also as a green alternative for daily commuting.
Highlighting the twin goals of personal wellness and environmental sustainability, the Fit India Cycling Drive seeks to bridge the gap between individual health and collective responsibility towards reducing pollution and building a healthier planet.
As a mark of respect, the participants observed a one-minute silence in solidarity with the victims of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir.
