Aizawl, Apr 28: Former Army Chief and Mizoram Governor General Vijay Kumar Singh expressed his sadness over the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people, including a Nepalese national. Singh called on the public to remain patient as the central government takes steps to address the situation.
In a statement, Singh emphasized the importance of vigilance to prevent future attacks, saying, “The government is taking certain actions against this. We all need to be patient. We need to keep our eyes and ears open in the future so that, if we see something abnormal, we can catch it beforehand.”
The attack on April 22 near Baisaran meadow, a popular tourist spot, has sparked calls for stronger measures against Pakistan. Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee, in a social media post, urged India to take decisive action, including reclaiming Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Following the attack, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) deployed teams to the site on April 23 to gather evidence and interview witnesses. The Indian Army has also conducted several operations in an effort to neutralize the attackers.
On April 23, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) held a meeting where it condemned the attack, offered condolences to the victims’ families, and expressed hope for the swift recovery of the injured. The committee also addressed the attack’s cross-border connections, noting its timing after successful elections in Jammu and Kashmir and the region’s ongoing development.
In a significant diplomatic move, India decided to reduce its diplomatic presence in Islamabad. By May 1, 2025, the Indian High Commission will withdraw its Defence, Navy, and Air Advisors, as well as five support staff members, reducing the total staffing from 55 to 30.
