Agartala, April 29, 2025: Tripura’s Teliamura Police Station staff arrested Nirmal Das, a tom-tom driver on Tuesday in connection with the alleged rape of a minor girl, a case registered last February. The arrest follows months of investigation after the accused reportedly absconded.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rajib Debnath provided details of the incident, stating, “A complaint was lodged against Nirmal Das, a resident of Korilong, for raping a minor girl in an area under our jurisdiction. After evading arrest since February, we arrested him based on credible information.”

The case has stirred controversy due to its complex circumstances. Sources reveal the minor girl, now married, was allegedly in a romantic relationship with Das. “The girl and the accused were in a love affair. At one point, he eloped with her, leading to the rape complaint,” OC Debnath explained.

The incident has raised concerns about whether the case stems from consensual romance or coercion, prompting a thorough police investigation. “We are examining all aspects of this sensitive matter. If the rape allegation is tied to a romantic relationship, it’s a serious issue,” Debnath added.

Police have assured that appropriate actions will follow once the investigation concludes. The case continues to draw attention due to its legal and social implications.
