Guwahati, Apr 30: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has resigned from the Gauhati High Court Bar Association, citing a conflict of interest in the ongoing dispute over the proposed Judicial Township at Rangmahal, North Guwahati.

Sarma submitted his resignation on April 30, following growing opposition from the Bar Association to the relocation of the High Court. In his resignation letter, Sarma expressed concern over the inadequate infrastructure of the current High Court, stating that it fails to meet modern-day needs.

“The existing infrastructure of our High Court has miserably failed to meet present-day requirements, and the situation will only worsen,” Sarma wrote.

Sarma also clarified that the site selection for the proposed Judicial Township was made by a High-Powered Committee, and the location is outside his constituency. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the project, despite its high cost, and emphasized its long-term benefits for the legal community.

Additionally, Sarma proposed that the existing High Court building be preserved as a museum to highlight its historical significance.
