Asem Bhakta Singh, a photojournalist with Hyderabad Headlines, has been elected as the new president of the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) for the 2025–27 term. The election was conducted on Thursday at the Manipur Press Club in Imphal.
Asem Bhakta secured 192 votes, defeating Bijoy Kakchingtabam, Associate Editor of Poknapham daily, who received 144 votes, marking a victory margin of 48 votes.
In the same election, eight journalists were elected to the AMWJU Standing Committee. Impact TV reporter Elangbam Ojitkumar (Musuk) secured the highest number of votes with 229, followed by Imphal Times reporter Konthoujam Gita Devi with 198 votes and Thingbaijam Lakhikanta Singh of Paojel with 190. Poknapham senior reporter Sonia Sorensangbam received 158 votes, Eikhogi Panthung reporter Leimapokpam Shanjitkumar (Bhakta) Singh got 157, Haobam Pravinkumar Singh of Ichel Express received 156, ISTV News senior reporter Khwairakpam Naoba got 155, and Kangleipakki Meira senior reporter Suraj Chanam received 136 votes.
Certificates were handed over to the newly elected candidates by the Returning Officer of the election.
