A large-scale one-day cleanliness drive was carried out along the Chakpi River in Chandel district, with enthusiastic participation from local residents and village chiefs. The initiative was jointly organized by the District Administration of Chandel and the Maha Area Chief’s Association (MACA).

The drive began early in the morning at Monsang Pantha village and concluded at the Assam Rifles Base Camp in Lamphou Pasna. The campaign aimed to restore the cleanliness of the Chakpi River, a vital water source flowing through several villages in the district.

Village chiefs from 50 villages under Chandel headquarters actively took part in the effort. They were organized into seven groups to clean different sections of the river.

Highlighting the importance of collective responsibility, MACA Chairman Js Angam Anal said, “This river is not meant for a single community; it is a shared resource for all. Fifty villages depend on this water. We urge everyone not to construct piggery sheds along the riverbanks and to refrain from dumping plastic waste and used diapers into the river.”

He also stressed the need for sustained efforts beyond the day’s campaign. “Let us not limit the cleaning of Chakpi River to today alone. Let’s make it a habit to keep it clean,” he added.

The event was attended by Naorem Pritam, SDO Chandel; Chongtham Sanjoy, OC Chandel District Police; and Naorem Munal, DFO Chandel Forest Division.
