The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the upgradation of six Government Secondary Schools to Higher Secondary level and the introduction of new streams in 11 Government Higher Secondary Schools to address the shortage of Class XI seats in the state.
Meghalaya currently has 51,067 Class XI seats, mostly concentrated in urban areas and the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region. This has resulted in a shortfall of approximately 12,000 seats.
The upgradation of the six secondary schools is expected to add 9,000 new seats. The addition of new streams in the 11 existing higher secondary schools aims to further expand access to higher secondary education across underserved areas.
