Guwahati, May 3: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has denied claims that Bangladeshi students are enrolled at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati. In response to allegations circulating on social media, CM Sarma confirmed that a thorough inquiry had been conducted, and no such students from Bangladesh were found to be enrolled at the institution.
The controversy began after a post on social media platform X alleged that a Bangladeshi student was admitted to IIT Guwahati. Although the original post was deleted, a follow-up claim suggested that fake names and photos of other Hindus were being used to spread misinformation.
“We have conducted a thorough inquiry and can categorically confirm that no such student from Bangladesh is enrolled at IIT Guwahati. IIT Guwahati is a prestigious and internationally respected institution,” CM Sarma wrote in a post.
The CM urged people to rely on verified information, adding, “We urge all to rely on verified facts rather than assumptions. Assam is not—and shall never be—a safe haven for anti-India activities.”
The claims were initially posted by the handle “bloody media,” which later clarified that the photo in question was of a Hindu named Chandan Dey. The account also praised the Assam government for its quick action in addressing the issue.
