Agartala, May 03, 2025: In a proactive move to boost road safety and public welfare, Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury convened a high-level review meeting on Friday at the State Guest House in Agartala. Top officials, including the Secretary of the Transport Department, gathered to assess ongoing projects and accelerate the implementation of the Rah-Veer Scheme—a nationwide Good Samaritan initiative launched by the Government of India on April 21, 2025.

Highlighting the importance of this initiative, Minister Chowdhury remarked, “Saving lives is a shared duty. Through this scheme, we are instilling a sense of urgency, compassion, and civic responsibility among citizens of Tripura.”

The Rah-Veer Scheme aims to encourage bystanders to assist seriously injured road accident victims during the crucial “Golden Hour.” Individuals who transport victims to hospitals within this time frame are eligible for a reward of ₹25,000 and a government-issued certificate. The scheme also permits up to five recognitions per person annually. Additionally, ten outstanding Rah-Veers will be selected at the national level each year for a ₹1 lakh award.

The Transport Minister emphasized the scheme’s role in eliminating public hesitation caused by legal concerns. Detailed provisions ensure fairness—rewards are divided if multiple Rah-Veers assist in a single case, and are applicable in incidents involving critical injuries or fatalities.

Verification mechanisms include police reports and medical validations, overseen by District Evaluation Committees and coordinated through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS). A State-Level Monitoring Committee ensures efficient execution and accountability.

The Transport Department is actively conducting awareness campaigns and partnerships with hospitals and law enforcement to spread the scheme’s message. The Minister urged the public to embrace the motto: “Your one phone call or brave decision can save someone’s entire future.”

Experts believe the Rah-Veer Scheme could be a game-changer in reducing fatalities due to delayed medical attention. With its strong community ethos, Tripura is poised to set a model for other states in fostering a culture of care and prompt action.
