Guwahati, May 5: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday launched a sharp attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, accusing him of visiting Pakistan and questioning the citizenship of his family members.

Sarma alleged that Gogoi’s visit to Pakistan was confirmed and raised concerns about the purpose of the trip. “Going to Pakistan is a crime. There are no tourist destinations like Kaziranga or Manas in Pakistan; it is only a terrorist hub. I have evidence that Gogoi went there for 15 days. He must explain what he did during that time,” Sarma stated.

The Chief Minister also questioned the frequent visits of Gogoi’s wife to Pakistan, claiming that she had traveled there 19 times. He further alleged that she may be receiving a salary from a Pakistan-based NGO while working in India.

Sarma claimed to have proof that Gogoi’s children are not Indian citizens and suggested that the Congress MP is not above the law. “If we can arrest 40 individuals for supporting Pakistan, action can also be taken against Gogoi. He is not God,” Sarma asserted.

Taking to social media, Sarma posted a series of questions for Gogoi, including inquiries about the purpose of his visit to Pakistan, his wife’s alleged financial ties to a Pakistan-based NGO, and the citizenship status of his family members.

In response, Gaurav Gogoi on Saturday criticized Sarma for focusing on personal issues instead of addressing the state’s challenges. “The Chief Minister’s focus is on my family, while I am concerned with the welfare of Assam’s children. Issues like rising school dropout rates and child labour need immediate attention,” Gogoi said.

The exchange has heightened political tensions between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress in Assam, with both leaders accusing each other of failing to address critical governance issues.
