BJP’s North East in-charge Sambit Patra arrived in Imphal on Monday for a two-day visit, as Manipur remains under President’s Rule and political uncertainty deepens. His arrival comes amid growing calls for the restoration of a popular government in the conflict-affected state.

Soon after landing, Patra boarded a helicopter to Churachandpur, where he held discussions with local MLA Vunzjagin Valte. He returned to Imphal around 1 p.m. and proceeded directly to the residence of former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh.

Patra was received at Imphal Airport by BJP Manipur General Secretary K. Sarat Kumar. Later in the day, he also met with Manipur Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh. He has checked into Hotel Imphal, where he is scheduled to stay overnight.

It remains unclear whether Patra will meet with the group of 21 MLAs who recently submitted a memorandum to the Centre, urging the formation of a new government in the state. The memorandum, dated April 29, was addressed to both the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Home Affairs. It was signed by 13 BJP legislators, along with three from the National People’s Party (NPP), three from the Naga People’s Front (NPF), and two independents.

In their joint appeal, the MLAs stated: “We feel that the installation of a popular government is the only means to bring peace and normalcy in Manipur.”

President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13 following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. While the state assembly has been placed under suspended animation, its term officially runs until 2027.

This marks Sambit Patra’s first visit to Manipur since February, and his presence is being closely watched as political pressure builds for a return to democratic governance.
