Agartala, May 05, 2025: The Tripura government has announced plans to bring all government buildings under solar power as part of its push for renewable energy. Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath made the announcement on Sunday, highlighting the growing adoption of solar energy in the state.
Addressing the media, Nath said the initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which aims to promote household solar installations. “So far, 13,536 families have registered online for solar power under the scheme,” he said, noting a surge in interest among residents.
“For the first time, 70 consumers who installed solar systems in their homes received Rs 30,902 each under the scheme,” Nath added. He also revealed that 266 households have already installed solar panels, while 184 have received government sz ubsidies. However, many eligible families are yet to apply for the BNsubsidy. In total, 95 families have secured loans amounting to Rs 1.75 crore, and 70 consumers are now receiving zero electricity bills.
Nath further announced that solar systems will be installed in all government buildings. “By March 2027, we aim to bring 50,000 consumers under the PM Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which could lead to an additional 150 MW of power generation,” he said. He also clarified that the state currently has no power shortage, with a peak demand of 370 MW and a current generation capacity of 372 MW.
The minister, however, expressed concern over low bill payment rates in the state. Out of 9.87 lakh power consumers, only 4.32 lakh are paying their electricity bills. Over the past year, authorities registered 1,015 cases of power theft, disconnected 10,779 illegal hook connections, and imposed fines amounting to Rs 4.19 crore, of which Rs 3.37 crore has been collected.
