Gangtok, May 7: The first Ride to Doka La, designed to promote battlefield tourism, was officially flagged off today from Zero Point, Gangtok, by the Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation, and Commerce & Industries, Tshering Thendup Bhutia.
This landmark event, part of Sikkim’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, witnessed the participation of 161 riders from nine motorcycle clubs, including Sikkim Riders’ Club, Northern Riders MC, and Khanchenndzonga MC. The flag-off ceremony was attended by Additional Chief Secretary CS Rao, Brigadier of the 17th Mountain Division Kunal Mukherjee, and Additional Secretary of Tourism Prena Chamling, alongside senior government officials.
The initiative, organized by the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department in collaboration with the Home Department and the 17th Mountain Division, focuses on highlighting Sikkim’s strategic border regions. Doka La, known for its historical significance and panoramic views, is being promoted as a key destination for battlefield tourism. The Minister emphasized the potential of this emerging sector to blend adventure with history and natural beauty.
The two-day expedition will take riders through the Eastern Himalayas, offering a unique opportunity to explore the region’s breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage. The event aims to boost tourism in the state by promoting lesser-known destinations like Doka La, while encouraging responsible and sustainable tourism practices.
