Shillong, May 9: In view of the prevailing situation in Bangladesh, the Meghalaya government has imposed a night curfew along the Indo-Bangladesh border in East Khasi Hills district for a period of two months, starting May 8, 2025.

The curfew, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), will remain in force daily from 8 PM to 6 AM within a 1 km stretch from the Zero Line along the international border.

According to the order issued by East Khasi Hills District Magistrate R.M. Kurbah, IAS, the curfew is intended to prevent illegal border crossings and regulate movement in the area. It prohibits gatherings of five or more persons, movement with intent to cross the border illegally, and carrying of items that could be used as weapons, such as sticks, rods, and stones.

The order also aims to deter illegal activities such as smuggling of cattle, contraband items, betelnuts, betel leaves, dry fish, bidis, cigarettes, and tea leaves in the border areas.

The curfew has been enforced with immediate effect due to security concerns arising from regional developments.

Meanwhile, following India’s retaliatory strikes under “Operation Sindoor” targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, Bangladesh has called for calm and restraint between India and Pakistan.

The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry stated that the government is closely monitoring the situation and urged both countries to pursue diplomatic efforts to maintain regional peace and stability.
