Agartala, May 10, 2025: Tension gripped Tripura’s top referral GB Hospital on Friday after a 22-year-old housewife attempted suicide by jumping from the third floor of the hospital building. The woman identified as Champa Rishi Das is currently undergoing treatment after being rescued by doctors and health workers.
According to eyewitnesses and hospital sources, the incident occurred amidst a heated altercation between Champa’s mother and mother-in-law on the hospital premises. The situation escalated into a physical fight, prompting hospital staff to intervene. “It was a chaotic scene. The two women were yelling and physically attacking each other in full view of patients and visitors,” said a hospital staff member.
Family members alleged that Champa, a resident of South Jambura in Khowai district has been suffering physical and mental abuse from her husband Arup Mani Das and her in-laws since their marriage four years ago. Her parents, who reside in Agartala’s Bhati Abhaynagar claim that several attempts were made to resolve the issue through community arbitration, but the abuse continued.
“Champa’s husband did not take her to the doctor even when she fell ill last Tuesday. It was only after her condition worsened that we admitted her to Khowai District Hospital. She was later referred to GB Hospital. Even here, they kept arguing with her. My daughter is suffering because of their constant mental torture,” said her mother.
According to reports, Champa attempted to jump from the third-floor window after an argument with her husband during treatment at GB Hospital. Fortunately, hospital staff managed to prevent the suicide attempt in time and resumed her treatment.
Champa’s mother has urged the administration to investigate the matter thoroughly. “I want justice for my daughter. Those who have driven her to this state must be held accountable,” she stated emotionally.
