Aizawl, May 14: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma inaugurated major bamboo processing units at the Sairang Horticulture Centre on Wednesday under the National Bamboo Mission. The initiative, supported by funding of Rs. 252.826 lakh, includes a Bamboo Treatment & Seasoning Plant, a Bamboo Depot & Godown, and an Activated Charcoal Unit.
Horticulture Minister C. Lalsawivunga, Rural Development Minister Prof. Lalnilawma, and Technical Adviser to the Chief Minister H. Ginzalal were present at the event.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said the new units mark a major step forward in bamboo-based industrial development in the state. He highlighted the significance of bamboo as a fast-growing, renewable resource, adding that sustainable bamboo charcoal production could reduce dependence on wood-based charcoal and help conserve forests.
He urged all stakeholders to ensure proper operation and maintenance of the facilities to maximize long-term benefits.
Minister C. Lalsawivunga described the development as the beginning of a new era in bamboo utilization in Mizoram, citing the state’s rich bamboo resources.
A technical report was presented by C. H. Lalmuanpuia, Director of Horticulture and Missions Director of the State Bamboo Mission. He explained that treated bamboo could last up to 50 years and that the Activated Charcoal Unit can produce three tonnes of charcoal daily, requiring 670 bamboo culms per day. It will also produce about 100 litres of vinegar per day, of which 54 litres can be refined through distillation.
Three bamboo clusters Chhingchhip, Baktawng, and Saiphal have been set up to ensure a consistent supply of raw materials. The North East Cane and Bamboo Development Council (NECBDC) is providing technical assistance and will conduct training programmes for effective management of the units.
The event was chaired by Special Secretary Pi Ramdinliani, IAS. A prayer service was led by Rev. Thanhnunan, and NECBDC Managing Director MC Omi Ningshen also addressed the gathering.
