A sense of shock and grief engulfed the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) campus on Tuesday morning after a 21-year-old B.Sc Nursing student was found hanging inside an abandoned hostel building.

The deceased, identified as Abiel Sanchiana, daughter of Dicky N. Sangma from Asananggre in West Garo Hills district, Tura, Meghalaya, was discovered at around 8:30 a.m. The tragic incident occurred in the old nursing hostel building, which has remained unused since it was severely damaged by a fire in 2017.

Abiel had been residing in Room No. 4 of the RIMS Nursing Hostel, which houses around 180 rooms. How she gained access to the sealed-off, disused structure remains unclear and is now a key focus of the ongoing investigation.

Following the report of the incident, personnel from Lamphel Police and forensic science experts arrived at the scene to examine the area. A case has been registered, and authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.

The body has been shifted to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) morgue for post-mortem examination.

As of now, RIMS authorities and police officials have not released a formal statement regarding the cause of death or the possibility of foul play. Further information is expected following the autopsy report and continued investigation.
