Guwahati, May 19: Former All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah was arrested by Dibrugarh police in connection with a violent clash that took place at a petrol pump in Duliajan. He was initially detained by Duliajan police on Sunday night and later brought to Dibrugarh Sadar Police Station under tight security for interrogation.

Baruah has been named in two FIRs — Case Nos. 89/2025 and 90/2025 — and has been booked under ten sections of the Indian Penal Code in one of the cases. The incident involved a confrontation among three groups, comprising around 20 individuals, which led to injuries to four petrol pump employees.

The arrest followed an FIR lodged by a woman, based on which police initiated action. Baruah underwent a medical examination before being taken into custody. Media persons were not allowed to question him during his arrival at the station.

In his statement, Baruah claimed he went to the location to defuse tensions and was not involved in any violence. A video shared on social media appears to support his claim, showing him trying to mediate during the clash.

Police have termed the case serious and are continuing investigations to identify others involved. Further action is expected as the probe continues.
