Agartala, May 31, 2025: A tragic incident took place in the early hours of Friday when a female elephant, estimated to be around three to four years old, was found dead at Tripura’s Dokhai Kami area of Dakshin Maharanipur ADC Village under Mungiakami RD Block in Khowai district.
According to local residents, the elephant was discovered lying unconscious in the forested region. Upon receiving the alert, elephant volunteers informed the forest department, prompting immediate action. Officials from Teliamura and Mungiakami forest ranges rushed to the location to assess the situation.
A team from Teliamura Veterinary Hospital, including Dr. Srijan Debbarma, Dr. Maltina Debbarma, and Dr. Abhishek Pal, led by Assistant Director Dr. Vishwabharati Debbarma, arrived at the site to conduct the postmortem examination.
“After the autopsy, it was confirmed that the elephant died due to a lightning strike,” said Dr. Vishwabharati Debbarma.
Following the examination, forest department personnel buried the carcass using a JCB at the site.
This incident adds to a growing concern in the region, as it marks the fourth elephant death in the Dakshin Maharani and nearby areas in the past one and a half years due to various causes.
Forest officials are urging for better monitoring and protection measures for wild elephants in the area to prevent further such losses.
