Guwahati, Jun 9: The Assam Assembly was temporarily adjourned for 30 minutes on Monday following a ruckus by opposition members during a special session. The disruption occurred shortly after Transport Minister Jogen Mohan moved a resolution to recommend renaming Dibrugarh airport as ‘Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika Airport.’

The protest by opposition MLAs centred around the issue of foreigners in the state. The special session had been convened specifically to adopt the resolution as part of the birth centenary celebrations of the iconic singer and cultural figure, Bhupen Hazarika.

The uproar forced the Speaker to adjourn the proceedings until order could be restored in the House.
