Manipur continued to reel under protests as demonstrators defied prohibitory orders and clashed with security forces across several districts of the Imphal valley, demanding the unconditional release of arrested Arambai Tenggol leader Kanan Singh and four others, police said on Tuesday.

Violence broke out in Imphal East’s Khurai Lamlong area on Monday night, prompting security personnel to fire tear gas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the agitating crowd. At least one four-wheeler was reportedly set ablaze by protesters during the incident, police said.

Similar demonstrations involving road blockades and tyre burning were reported in Thoubal and Kakching districts, as public anger continued to mount.

Tensions escalated further in Tera area of Imphal West district when unidentified miscreants opened fire at security forces on Monday evening. “At least seven rounds from small firearms were fired at CRPF personnel while they were clearing protester-installed roadblocks,” an official said. Combined teams of paramilitary and state police launched search operations, but further action was obstructed by demonstrators.

In Nambol, Bishnupur district, two police personnel suffered minor injuries during a confrontation with protesters attempting to block the road. “An FIR has been registered following the incident,” officials confirmed, adding that the clash occurred during an operation led by the district SP to remove barricades.

Despite overnight unrest, normalcy returned to Imphal city on Tuesday morning, with residents seen purchasing essential supplies from roadside vendors and markets resuming regular activity.
