Manipur Police on Wednesday detained 19 individuals in Imphal East district for allegedly engaging in street violence, including road blockades, harassment of commuters, and creating public disturbances — most of them reportedly under the influence of alcohol.

According to police officials, the group’s actions disrupted public order and posed a serious threat to the safety and convenience of residents. Law enforcement personnel intervened promptly and took the offenders into custody.

In a post on X, Manipur Police stated, “19 individuals were found blocking roads, harassing commuters, and creating public disturbances, mostly under the influence of alcohol. Their actions caused inconvenience to law-abiding citizens and disrupted public order.”

The police also issued a stern warning to the public, particularly the youth, urging them to refrain from participating in such unlawful and anti-social behaviour. “Engaging in such behaviour can lead to legal consequences that may adversely affect one’s future and career prospects,” the post read.

The crackdown follows the recent easing of restrictions in the Imphal valley. Prohibitory orders were lifted in five districts — Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Kakching — from 5 am to 5 pm daily, allowing free movement of people during those hours.

The restrictions had been in place since the night of June 7 following widespread protests triggered by the arrest of an Arambai Tenggol leader by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). District magistrates have cautioned that while movement is permitted, any activities that threaten law and order will not be tolerated.
