Assam Honours Dr. Sonal Mansingh with Srimanta Sankaradeva Award 2023

Guwahati, Jun 12: The Srimanta Sankaradeva Award 2023 has been conferred on Dr. Sonal Mansingh, a renowned classical dancer, for her outstanding contributions to Indian classical dance. The award was presented by Assam Governor Laxmanacharya during a ceremony held on the occasion of Sri Madhabdev Tithi.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma paid tribute to Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev and extended congratulations to Dr. Mansingh on behalf of the people of Assam. In a post on his official X handle, the Chief Minister stated that Dr. Mansingh has devoted her life to preserving Bharat’s classical dance traditions and ensuring their relevance in contemporary times.

The Srimanta Sankaradeva Award, instituted in 1986, is a national-level honour presented to individuals for their exceptional contributions in various fields. Named after the 15th-century saint-reformer Srimanta Sankardev, the award highlights achievements aligned with his cultural and spiritual legacy.

The Chief Minister also noted that culture was the foundation of Sankardev’s teachings and that the classical dance form Sattriya, created by the saint, continues to inspire generations.
