Guwahati, June 12: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said that the state government will continue deporting individuals identified as foreigners, even if their names are included in the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Sarma clarified that the NRC, updated in Assam under the supervision of the Supreme Court, cannot be considered the final proof of Indian citizenship. “The way NRC was carried out leaves enough room for doubt,” he said.
The final NRC list, published on August 31, 2019, excluded over 19 lakh applicants. However, it remains unofficial, as it has not yet been notified by the Registrar General of India, and therefore lacks legal enforceability.
