Agartala, June 14, 2025: Tripura’s Leader of Opposition and CPI(M) Politburo member Jitendra Chaudhury on Saturday alleged that a section of the ruling party is deliberately trying to vitiate the atmosphere across Tripura in order to retain power by “confusing the situation.”
Chaudhury made the remarks after visiting the home of Shariful Islam, whose recent tragic death has stirred communal and political tensions in the state.
Accompanied by former MP Shankar Prasad Datta, women leader Krishna Rakshit and the party’s divisional secretary Amal Chakraborty, Chaudhury met Shariful’s parents and other family members.
Speaking to the media personnel after the visit, Chaudhury said, “In the past, there have been instances of inter-community love affairs. It’s a normal part of society. Shariful Islam’s case was no different. But an evil section within society exploited the situation and involved certain community leaders in this conspiracy.”
He further alleged, “A section of the ruling party is trying to create a toxic atmosphere across the state. They are attempting to maintain power by creating confusion and instability.”
Chaudhury expressed satisfaction over the arrest of those accused in the case but insisted that strict legal action must follow. “The administration must take tough action against those plotting to disturb social harmony. They should be given the harshest punishment possible,” he said.
The CPI(M) leader urged the police to ensure that such incidents are not repeated and warned against communal polarization being used for political gain.
