Union Minister Jitendra Singh launched a five-year Vision Document titled “Income Generation from Banana Cultivation in Wokha District” under the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative. The project aims to boost farmers’ income and promote banana cultivation as a sustainable livelihood in Wokha district.
The launch event took place at the office of the Deputy Commissioner, with Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Y. Patton and legislators Mhathung Yanthan, Y.M. Humtsoe, and Achumbemo Kikon in attendance. Singh is currently on a two-day visit to the district.
In his address, Singh spoke about the region’s developmental progress over the past decade, noting improvements in industrial activity and employment generation. He encouraged community-based organisations in Wokha to follow Mizoram’s grassroots model in addressing drug abuse and stressed the importance of NGO involvement due to financial limitations faced by the government.
Singh also addressed environmental concerns, including the rising human-elephant conflict, and assured that a central meeting would be held to work out long-term solutions. He further highlighted the need for improved water harvesting and better resource management.
Commenting on the Nagaland-Assam border issue, Singh said efforts are being made to resolve the dispute using space technology and satellite imagery to reach a peaceful and lasting solution.
