In solemn remembrance of the brave Manipuri warriors who sacrificed their lives during the 1891 Anglo-Manipur War, particularly in the Western battlefield against British forces advancing from Silchar, members of the Descendants of the Anglo-Manipur War 1891 and the Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipur War 1891 Martyrs and Freedom Fighters of Kangleipak offered floral tributes at Kiyam Shanglen, Bishnupur today.
The Western front, which included the historic battles of Laimaton, Leimatak, and Lamangdong, witnessed fierce resistance from courageous fighters such as Sanakha Kalasana Sagolhanjaba, Sananganba, Lourungpurel, Major Leitam Mukta, Longjamba Polia Bira, and many other unsung heroes. The tribute ceremony honoured their legacy and valour.
Several dignitaries attended the memorial event, including Toijam Opendro, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Bishnupur District; Lourembam Nganbi, President of All Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL); Prof. Leitam Nabachandra Singh, President of Leitam Mukta Memorial Committee; Khaidem Saratkumar, Advisor of Ningthemcha Ningsing Lup; Longjam Ronendro, President of Longjamba Polla (Bira) Memorial Trust; and Joychandra Konthoujam, Chairman of the Justice Committee.
Addressing the gathering, Joychandra Konthoujam voiced grave concerns over the ongoing violence in the state. “Even though the entire country knows that the Chin-Kuki narco-terrorists behave like mad dogs, how long will the authorities allow them to attack innocent Manipuri civilians?” he asked, questioning the continued silence of the central government amidst killings, arson, and attacks on civilians and state infrastructure.
He also criticized the inaction of the state’s elected representatives. “At this critical moment, those who call themselves leaders must stand with the people. It is shameful that Kuki MLAs from Nagaland and Mizoram are actively working for their communities, while our own MLAs fail to act meaningfully,” he said.
Joychandra urged all MLAs to press for a comprehensive government response and to support the rehabilitation.
