Gangtok, Apr 24: The Parliamentary Committee on Subordinate Legislation, Rajya Sabha, chaired by Member of Parliament Milind Deora, convened a meeting with key stakeholders from Sikkim’s power sector in Gangtok on Wednesday. The meeting focused on the implementation and progress of renewable energy initiatives in the state, with a particular emphasis on solar energy.
The session was attended by representatives from the Sikkim Renewable Energy Development Agency (SREDA), Power Department, Sikkim State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SSERC), and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India.
Deora highlighted recent amendments aimed at encouraging the use of renewable energy technologies, especially solar power, as part of the national energy transition efforts.
Principal Chief Engineer-cum-Secretary, Power Department, Bikash Deokota, stated that Sikkim is actively promoting solar energy projects, particularly rooftop solar and off-grid systems. He said rooftop solar installations are helping to strengthen the state’s energy independence and financial stability.
An interactive session followed the meeting, during which participants discussed implementation strategies, regulatory challenges, and opportunities to scale up rooftop solar adoption across the state.
Also present were MNRE Director Jeevan Kumar Jethani; Principal Chief Engineers Sonam Rinchen Bhutia, Karma Sonam Bhutia, and TT Bhutia; Chief Engineer Shova Thapa; SREDA Director Jeewan Thapa; and SSERC Director Palchen Chaktha.
