Agartala, May 12, 2025: The CPIM launched a scathing attack on the ruling BJP government accusing it of alienating itself from the people and resorting to a “reign of terror” in Tripura to suppress public dissent.
Speaking to media personnel at CPIM state headquarters here this evening, CPIM Central Committee General Secretary Mariam Alexander Baby stated, “The government is unable to stand before the people because it has isolated itself from them. To cover up its failures, the BJP is enforcing fear across the state.”
Baby also questioned the involvement of the United States in recent India-Pakistan ceasefire talks. “Why does India need a third party like the United States to mediate with Pakistan? This undermines our sovereignty,” he said, referring to US President Donald Trump’s unexpected claim that India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire under his mediation. “Trump behaves as though he is the president of the entire world,” he added, demanding that the Indian government clarify the role of third-party mediation in such critical matters.
Politburo member and opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhury echoed Baby’s concerns, warning that the BJP’s current trajectory undermines the democratic values of India’s freedom struggle. “We are witnessing dictatorship under the guise of governance. The BJP’s strategy is to create stagnation and instill fear,” he said.
Chaudhury highlighted growing unrest in Tripura over issues like water shortages, power supply, and the education system. “People are out on the streets daily. MGNREGA workers are locking up block offices after being denied wages. Instead of addressing grievances, the BJP distracts with events like ‘Khela Mela’ and uses microphones to drown out dissent,” he said.
He also alleged recent violent incidents in several sub-divisions, including Rajnagar, Dharmanagar, Udaipur, Mohanpur Manda and Dukli, where CPIM offices were attacked and workers assaulted.
Chaudhury condemned attempts to intimidate minorities and declared that the party would develop a strategy to resist the attacks. He also announced new appointments in the party, including Ratan Das and Krishna Rakshit being taken to the state secretariat and Haribal Debnath and Himangshu of Longtharai Valley becoming invitee members of the committee.
Veteran CPIM leader and Left Front state convenor Manik Dey was also present during the press conference.
