Dhubri, May 16: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accompanied by Power Minister Prasanta Phukan, on Thursday visited the proposed site for a thermal power plant at Chirakuta Charuwa Bakra in Bilasipara, Dhubri district. The site, located approximately eight kilometres from Bilasipara railway station, spans 3,300 bighas, 2 katas, and 15 lechas.
The Chief Minister, along with Dhubri Deputy Commissioner Dibakar Nath and senior officials, conducted an inspection to assess the site’s feasibility for the project. He directed the district administration to begin necessary developmental activities, including the construction of approach roads and other essential infrastructure.
Addressing concerns related to land acquisition, Sarma assured that any families requiring relocation due to the project would be provided with suitable alternative land for rehabilitation.
The project forms part of Assam’s broader vision to achieve energy self-sufficiency by 2035, with a target of generating 5,000 MW of thermal power. To facilitate this, the state government has launched the Assam Thermal Power Generation Product Promotion Policy 2025, which has already attracted investment proposals worth Rs 77.3 billion. The Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd. will act as the nodal agency for implementing the policy, with a single-window clearance system for expediting project approvals.
Later in the day, the Chief Minister visited Goalpara district to inspect the sites for the proposed medical college, hospital, and Energy Park. At Bhandara village under the Balijana Revenue Circle, Sarma reviewed the land earmarked for the medical college and instructed officials to ensure proper connectivity from the National Highway. He stated that construction of the Goalpara Medical College and Hospital, announced in the state budget, would begin within the current financial year.
He also visited the site identified for the proposed Energy Park at Rakhasini in Goalpara and reviewed various aspects of the project, directing departments to proceed with necessary measures.
Sarma was accompanied by Power Minister Prasanta Phukan, PWD Special Commissioner Chandan Sarma, Goalpara Deputy Commissioner Khanindra Choudhury, and other senior officials during the visits.
