In the remote hills of Manipur’s Kamjong district, 31-year-old Pamchuiwon Kashak Hungyo is breathing new life into Tangkhul Naga traditions through her handmade jewellery brand, Tangkhul Beads, while creating employment opportunities for local women.

Pamchuiwon, who grew up in a farming family and has no formal education, began crafting traditional earrings and necklaces in 2016 as a personal hobby. “We could hardly afford clothes or jewellery, so I learned to create them myself,” she shared.

Her self-taught skills turned into a mission to preserve indigenous culture and promote economic independence. In October 2024, she officially launched Tangkhul Beads to bring focus back to traditional attire, which she believes is being overshadowed by modern fashion trends. “Our traditional outfits reflect our identity,” she said.

Featuring pieces such as Kongsang necklaces and Khommasin bridal ornaments, her creations are more than accessories—they are symbols of Tangkhul identity and resilience. Despite the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Pamchuiwon continued to expand her work, offering opportunities to local women through training and employment.

As peace returns to Manipur, ventures like Tangkhul Beads are helping communities preserve their cultural roots while paving the way for social and economic empowerment.
