Assamese Singer Gayatri Hazarika Passes Away At 44 After Battling Cancer

Guwahati, May 16: Renowned Assamese singer Gayatri Hazarika, known for her melodious voice and timeless songs like “Sara Pate Pate Fagun Name,” passed away on Friday at the age of 44 after a prolonged battle with colon cancer. She breathed her last at 2:15 pm at Nemcare Hospital in Guwahati.

Confirming her death, Dr Harish Baruah of Nemcare Hospital said, “It’s a very sad day for all of us. We have lost Gayatri Hazarika. She passed away at our hospital at 2:15 pm today.” Hospital Managing Director Hitesh Baruah added that she was admitted three days ago after her condition worsened and was shifted to the ICU on Wednesday, where she passed away.

Gayatri Hazarika was widely admired for her contributions to Assamese music. Apart from “Sara Pate Pate Fagun Name,” her popular songs included “Eman Semeka Kathare” and “Mathu Ejak Boroxun.”

Reacting to the news, music composer Jayanta Kakoty told News Live, “She was a very talented singer. Her untimely death is an irreplaceable loss to the music industry.”

Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora expressed condolences on social media, writing, “Deeply saddened by the untimely demise of Gayatri Hazarika. Her soulful voice enriched Assamese music and touched countless hearts. A great loss.”

Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika also paid tribute, stating, “Her soulful voice in timeless classics enriched Assam’s musical legacy. My deepest condolences to her family and admirers. Om Shanti.”
