Guwahati, May 17: Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan visited Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve in Assam on Friday as part of his four-day tour of the Northeast. Accompanied by his family, the minister lauded the park’s biodiversity and the efforts being made to protect its wildlife, particularly the endangered one-horned rhinoceros.

During a jungle safari, Chouhan described Kaziranga as the “pride of the nation,” noting that it is home to over 80 percent of the world’s one-horned rhinoceroses. He praised the role of the forest department and acknowledged the growing presence of female forest guards in protecting the park.

Emphasising environmental sustainability, Chouhan said, “The earth belongs to all living beings. If humanity believes it can survive alone, it is mistaken. We must protect plants, animals, and insects to ensure a safe and livable environment for future generations.”

He also commended the efforts made to curb rhino poaching, crediting the dedication and sacrifice of forest personnel. The visit forms part of Chouhan’s broader itinerary to review the implementation of welfare schemes across Assam, Nagaland, and Mizoram.
