The 4th State-Level Eeru Hei Kumhei (Watermelon Festival) began today with much enthusiasm at the Market Complex in Sunusiphai, Moirang. The five-day festival, organized by the Farmers Club of Sunusiphai under the aegis of the Department of Horticulture & Soil Conservation, Government of Manipur, aims to promote sustainable farming and highlight the region’s flourishing watermelon cultivation.

The inaugural ceremony saw the presence of several notable figures. Former Moirang MLA M. Prithviraj Singh attended as Chief Guest, while Sushila Chanu, District Officer of Horticulture & Soil Conservation (Bishnupur District), presided over the function. M. Birachandra Singh, former member of the 7-Ngangkhalawai Zilla Parishad, graced the event as Guest of Honour.

Farmers, local residents, community elders, and officials from the horticulture department gathered in large numbers to celebrate the opening of the festival. In his address, M. Prithviraj Singh lauded the farmers of Sunusiphai and neighbouring areas for their dedication to organic farming and their contribution to the local economy. He praised their efforts in supplying fresh, quality produce at affordable prices and encouraged them to adopt innovative marketing techniques to reach wider markets.

He also highlighted the need for greater government intervention and support to sustain watermelon and vegetable farming in the region. Referring to the adverse impact of recent ethnic unrest, he expressed concern over the loss of livestock due to terrorist activities and informed the audience that the Governor of Manipur had been approached for compensation to affected farmers.

The festival will continue until May 30, offering visitors a chance to purchase fresh, locally grown watermelons and vegetables while celebrating the region’s agricultural heritage.
