Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually laid the foundation stone for several major development projects in Sikkim during the Golden Jubilee celebration of the state’s statehood, held at Paljor Stadium, Gangtok, on Thursday. The Prime Minister joined the event as the Chief Guest via video conference.

The projects span infrastructure, tourism, healthcare, women empowerment, and cultural development across various districts of the state.

In Gangtok District, the Swarna Jayanti Convention Centre at Namli is set to become a prime venue for national and international events, enhancing the region’s urban infrastructure. Additionally, the Swarna Jayanti Sports & Cultural Complex will support the promotion of sports and cultural activities.

In Namchi District, the Skywalk Project at Bhaley Dhunga in Yangyang will feature a 240-metre-long circular glass-bottom walkway — the first eco-tourism skywalk of its kind in India — aimed at attracting adventure enthusiasts.

The Nathula Border Experience project in Gangtok District will focus on improving tourism infrastructure near the Indo-China border. The plan includes the construction of multi-level parking, a covered walkway, escalators, a cafeteria, a medical infirmary, and the Indo-China Gate.

In Gyalshing District, the Singshore Bridge, the highest suspension bridge in Sikkim, will be converted into a glass skywalk bridge. Funded by the PM-DevINE Fund and the State Government, the bridge—originally built in 1994—will now offer bungee jumping, viewing decks, parking, landscaping, and other tourist-friendly features.

The Prime Minister also laid the foundation for a Working Women Hostel in Tadong, Gangtok District, aimed at supporting women’s employment and empowerment.

Further, a 100-bedded District Hospital will be established in Pakyong District, aimed at improving healthcare access and services for the local population.
