Normal functioning of government offices came to a complete standstill across the Naga-inhabited hill districts of Manipur as the All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) launched a 48-hour office picketing protest starting June 2, 2025. The agitation is in opposition to the ongoing construction of the Indo-Myanmar border fencing and the unilateral cancellation of the Free Movement Regime (FMR), both of which the student body has vehemently opposed.

In Senapati district, the protest was spearheaded by the Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA) along with its federating units—Mao Students’ Union (MSU), Maram Students’ Union (MKS), Poumai Naga Students’ Union (PNTM), Thangal Students’ Union (TAJ), and Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Senapati Zone (ZSU-SZ). Government offices across the district remained closed, severely disrupting administrative activities.

Tensions flared on Tuesday at the Senapati district headquarters when a vehicle belonging to the Superintendent of Police (SP) was reportedly damaged during a confrontation. Sources said a scuffle broke out after the SP allegedly attempted to bypass the picketing, resulting in a heated altercation with protestors.

ANSAM has reiterated its firm stance against any move that undermines the historical and traditional rights of the Naga people, especially their long-standing practice of unrestricted cross-border movement along the Indo-Myanmar frontier. The current protest, the association stated, is part of a larger campaign demanding recognition and respect for these indigenous rights.
