Gangtok, June 4: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang convened a crucial meeting today with senior officials from the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), led by Executive Director AK Dash. He was accompanied by Jitendra Kumar, General Manager and Head of Project (HOP) for Teesta-V, and Lhendup Lepcha, HOP for the Teesta-IV Project.

During the meeting, several important issues concerning the ongoing and upcoming hydroelectric projects in the state were discussed. A major point of emphasis from the Chief Minister was the allocation of contract works particularly those valued up to Rs 20 crore to local contractors within Sikkim. He highlighted that works not requiring specialized expertise, such as road construction, building projects, and river protection works, should be given to capable local firms.

Stressing the importance of the “Vocal for Local” initiative, the Chief Minister highlighted the need to empower local enterprises and boost employment opportunities within the state. He called for constructive and amicable cooperation from NHPC in supporting this vision.

The proposal was positively received by the NHPC delegation, who acknowledged the importance of strengthening local participation in development activities.

In line with this initiative, the Government of Sikkim is expected to issue a formal notification in the coming days to facilitate the implementation of this policy.
