Guwahati, Jun 5: Floodwaters have submerged approximately 60 per cent of Assam’s Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, threatening the habitat of the endangered one-horned rhinoceros.
The flooding, caused by rising water levels in the Brahmaputra and Kopili rivers, began after June 1 and has inundated large portions of the 16 sq km sanctuary. Forest officials said water entered through natural channels and the Goronga Beel, leading to severe disruption of forest operations.
Ten of the 17 anti-poaching camps, including Dholi, Hahchora, Pagladova, and Kamarpur, have been affected. The Dholi camp is nearly 80 per cent underwater.
Despite the situation, most of the sanctuary’s 107 rhinos have moved to higher ground. The forest department has stepped up patrolling and is relocating elephant camps to safer areas.
Authorities remain on high alert to respond to any emergencies arising from the continued flooding.
