Agartala, June 09, 2025: Despite tall promises of affordable healthcare, the much-anticipated ‘Jan Aushadhi Kendra’ at Unakoti District Hospital at Kailashahar district remains closed drawing sharp criticism and sparking public resentment over administrative negligence.
The Jan Aushadhi Kendra, part of the central government’s Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) was meant to provide low-cost generic medicines to the poor. But at the Bhagabannagar-based district hospital, patients with prescriptions in hand are returning empty-handed. The centre closed for years now has turned into a symbol of apathy.
“This is proof that the government’s words and actions don’t match. They promise affordable healthcare, but we are forced to buy costly medicines or depend on home remedies,” said a local resident angrily.
An order dated March 17, 2025, from the Director of Health Services had instructed the opening of the centre within three months. A ward was to be allotted to Md. Nurul Amin Khadim, the selected vendor. But with the June 17 deadline fast approaching, there’s no sign of progress.
“We are trying to get the center up and running quickly. The person who was awarded the contract is still in time. Hopefully, the center will open soon,” said Dr. Rohan Pal, Superintendent of the District Hospital. However, patients say they are tired of waiting. “We want action, not hope,” said another frustrated patient.
Sources alleged that internal lobbying within the hospital is delaying the process possibly to benefit private pharmacies. Questions are also being raised about whether some doctors are indirectly benefiting from the sale of high-priced medicines outside.
“If crores can be spent in the name of development, why can’t a basic medicine store be opened on time?” asked a local activist. “This isn’t development for the people—it’s development for profiteers,” activist added.
With only days left before the June 17 deadline, all eyes are now on whether the government will act decisively—or let another promise fade into bureaucratic limbo.
