Agartala, June 11, 2025: In a sensational murder case that has gripped Tripura, the body of Shariful Islam, a 28-year-old electrician from Indranagar was recovered from a deep freezer at a paan shop in Narayanpur, Gandacherra under Dhalai district. The murder allegedly driven by a love triangle has led to the arrest of six individuals including two women by the police.

A special team from the NCC Police Station in Agartala, along with forensic experts and Gandacherra police, recovered the body on Wednesday afternoon. The breakthrough came after the accused confessed during interrogation, Superintendent of Police (West Tripura) Dr. Kiran Kumar K confirmed while addressing reporters.

Detailing the gruesome sequence of events, SP Dr. Kumar said, “On the night of June 8, Shariful was called out of his home by his friend, Dr. Dibakar Saha, under the pretext of giving a gift to Joydeep Das of South Indranagar. When Shariful arrived at the location, Nabanita Das (25) and Animesh Yadav (21) were already present. In their presence, Dr. Dibakar Saha suffocated Shariful to death.”

Police believe the motive behind the murder stemmed from a long-standing love affair. “Shariful and Nabanita had been in a relationship for years. However, Dibakar also developed an affair with Nabanita. To eliminate Shariful, they conspired to kill him,” Dr. Kumar added.

On June 9, the accused reportedly purchased a large travel bag, placed Shariful’s body inside, and transported it to Gandacherra, Dibakar’s hometown where they concealed the body in a deep freezer at a shop owned by Dibakar’s father.

Dibakar, who had been living in a relative’s house in Agartala, fled to Gandacherra with the others the next morning. The six accused were apprehended on Monday night based on surveillance and tip-offs.

The arrested individuals include: Dr. Dibakar Saha, Nabanita Das, Animesh Yadav, Joydeep Das and two others whose identities are yet to be officially disclosed.

Shariful Islam, who worked for the Smart City project in Agartala, was described as a hardworking youth by local residents. His tragic death has shocked the state and raised concerns about increasing interpersonal crimes driven by personal rivalries.

Further investigation is underway to file charges under appropriate IPC sections.
