Gangtok, Jun 11: The sacred Buddhist festival of Saga Dawa, marking the birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana of Lord Buddha, was celebrated with deep reverence at Kartok Monastery on Wednesday.

The observance witnessed the presence of MLA of Gnathang-Machong constituency, Pamin Lepcha, and Zilla Adhyaksha Lhaden Bhutia, whose participation added significance to the spiritual event.

Devotees from nearby villages and neighbourhoods gathered at the monastery from early morning to participate in the sacred rituals. The day began with prayer sessions, butter lamp offerings, and chanting of holy mantras by the resident monks, creating an atmosphere of peace and devotion.

A religious procession was held with spiritual fervour, starting from Kartok Monastery and passing through Main Market, Bhanu Turning, New Market, and Nopgaon, before returning via Namcheybong. Monks and devotees carried sacred scriptures and images of Lord Buddha, accompanied by the sound of traditional drums and chants invoking peace and compassion.

As part of the day’s observance, devotees offered cooked meals, dry rations, and other items to the monastic community. Many chose to follow a vegetarian diet and took personal vows to avoid negative actions, in line with the belief that virtuous acts performed during Saga Dawa bring manifold blessings.

The celebration at Kartok Monastery reflected the spirit of mindfulness and compassion, resonating with the teachings of Lord Buddha and promoting universal well-being.
