Shillong, Jun 16: The Centre has sanctioned ₹951.27 crore for the construction of the Tura Bypass in Meghalaya, aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity in the region. The bypass will span 29.03 kilometres, connecting NH-127B to NH-217, and will be developed as a 2-lane road with paved shoulders.

As per Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, the proposed bypass will begin near Sanchonggre village on NH-127B and end at Jenggitchakgre village on NH-217. It is designed to bypass the heavily congested urban stretch of NH-217 that runs through the heart of Tura town, where narrow roads and heavy traffic often hinder smooth travel.

NH-217, formerly NH-51, is a key route linking Guwahati to Dalu, a town on the India-Bangladesh border that also serves as an inland customs check-post.

The Tura Bypass is expected to significantly reduce congestion in Tura, enhance road safety, and ensure smoother movement by separating local traffic from through traffic.
